Network Notes — Privacy Policy
Network Notes is a local-network messaging app for macOS. This policy explains exactly what data Network Notes accesses, what leaves your device, and what is stored locally.
Summary
Network Notes collects no personal data and has no server. Messages travel directly between your Macs, encrypted end-to-end. Nothing passes through DataIsland or any third-party service. The app has no account, no analytics, and no internet requirement.
What Network Notes Accesses
Local Network
Network Notes uses Bonjour (mDNS) to discover other Macs running Network Notes on your local network, and establishes direct peer-to-peer TCP connections to them. All communication is local — no traffic is routed to the internet.
Message Content
The text, images, and links you send are stored locally on your Mac in an encrypted SwiftData database. They are never transmitted to DataIsland or any external server. Message history is visible only on the Mac that sent or received them.
Display Name
Network Notes advertises your Mac's display name (defaulting to your Mac's computer name, which you can customise) to other Macs on the same network via Bonjour. This name is visible to anyone on the same local network who is running Network Notes. It is never sent to DataIsland or any internet service.
Encryption
Every message is encrypted end-to-end using AES-256-GCM. Encryption keys are derived via a P-256 Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH) handshake that occurs directly between the two Macs. Your private key is generated on your device and stored only in your macOS Keychain. DataIsland never has access to your keys or your messages.
What Leaves Your Device
Network Notes makes no outgoing internet connections. The only data that leaves your Mac is the encrypted message payload sent directly to another Mac on the same local network. No data is sent to DataIsland or any third party.
Login Item
If you choose to enable Open at Login, Network Notes registers itself as a login item
using Apple's SMAppService API. This registration is stored locally by
macOS and is not reported to DataIsland.
Data Retention
Message history is stored locally on your Mac for as long as you choose to keep it. You can delete individual messages or clear all history at any time from the history window. Deleting the app removes all locally stored data.
Children's Privacy
Network Notes does not collect any data from any user, including children. It has no account system, no analytics, and no network communication outside the local network.
Changes to This Policy
If this policy changes materially, the updated version will be posted at this URL with a new "Last updated" date. Because Network Notes collects no data, changes are expected to be minimal.
