A clean, distraction-free text editor with adjustable font size, full undo, smart quotes, and continuous spell check. Opens and saves .txt files.
Rich Text
Full RTF editing — bold, italic, underline, font, size, color, alignment, lists, and images. Opens .rtf, .docx, and .html files. The replacement for TextEdit's rich text mode.

The international features Americans don't know they're missing.
macOS has world-class multilingual support built in. Most writing apps ignore it. PolyWrite surfaces it all — automatically, without configuration.
Spell Check in Every Language at Once
Type a sentence in French, then one in Japanese, then one in Arabic. PolyWrite checks spelling in all of them simultaneously — no language picker, no switching, no setup.
Automatic Language Detection
The status bar identifies the dominant language of your document as you write. Write enough text and the language badge appears — tap it for options.
Right-to-Left Writing
Writing in Arabic, Hebrew, Urdu, or Persian? PolyWrite detects the language and offers to switch the entire editor to right-to-left in one tap. Cursor, alignment, and layout all follow.
Smart Quotes by Language
Smart quote substitution follows the convention of whatever you're writing in — no manual setting required.
Arabic · Hebrew · Urdu · Persian/Farsi · Pashto · Kurdish · Sindhi · Yiddish · Dhivehi · Uyghur
An AI assistant that works with what you're writing.
The AI panel slides in alongside your document. Choose a quick action or type any prompt. Results appear in the panel — review them, then insert at your cursor or copy to the clipboard.
- Improve — polish the selected text for clarity and flow
- Summarise — compress a long passage to its key points
- Concise — cut the word count while keeping the meaning
- Formal / Casual — shift the register of any passage
- Translate — translate to any of 20 target languages via the AI panel
- Free prompt — type any instruction; the document text is included as context
- Apple Intelligence — on-device, private, no API key. Requires Apple Silicon + macOS 26.
- OpenRouter — cloud-based with your own API key. Choose from Claude, GPT-4o, Gemini, and others.
- Neither — PolyWrite is fully functional without any AI configuration.
Two ways to translate — on-device and AI-powered.
Apple Translation macOS 15+
Tap the translate button in the toolbar. Apple's Translation panel opens — pick your target language and tap Replace. The whole document is translated on-device, completely free, no API key required.
AI Translation
The AI panel includes a dedicated translation row: pick any of 20 languages from the dropdown and tap Go. The result lands in the panel — review it, then insert at your cursor to place the translation right where you want it.
23 themes. The whole app changes — not just the background.
Every theme sets the editor, toolbar, status bar, and AI panel as a coordinated palette. Light, dark, and everything between.
RTF done right. And a bridge to FusionMD when you need more.
PolyWrite is a complete RTF editor: bold, italic, underline, fonts, colors, alignment, lists, and images — everything TextEdit has, plus themes, AI, translation, and proper multilingual support.
When a document grows into something you want to publish — an ebook, a laid-out report, an ePub — tap Open in FusionMD. PolyWrite converts your RTF to Markdown and opens it in FusionMD in one step, with formatting preserved.
The rest of what a good writing app should have.

Frequently asked questions
How is PolyWrite different from TextEdit?
TextEdit hasn't changed meaningfully in over a decade. PolyWrite adds: 23 app themes, an AI writing assistant, Apple Translation, Markdown mode, automatic language detection, right-to-left writing support, simultaneous multilingual spell check, a live word count, font size control, and a one-step handoff to FusionMD for publishing. It opens and saves all the same file formats TextEdit does.
Can I use PolyWrite without setting up AI?
Yes. The editor, themes, spell check, translation (via Apple Translation on macOS 15+), and all file formats work completely without AI. The AI panel is optional. If you never open it, PolyWrite works as a clean, capable RTF and plain text editor.
How does multilingual spell check work?
PolyWrite enables macOS's continuous spell checking with automatic language identification. macOS detects the language of each paragraph as you type and applies the correct dictionary — without you choosing anything. Write a paragraph in French, one in German, one in Japanese — each is checked in its own language simultaneously.
What does 'Open in FusionMD' do?
It converts your current document to Markdown and opens the result in FusionMD in one step. Bold text becomes **bold**, heading-sized fonts become # headings, and the rest becomes clean Markdown. From there you can publish to ePub3, IDML (for Affinity/InDesign), or any of FusionMD's export formats. FusionMD must be installed for this button to appear.
What file formats does PolyWrite open and save?
PolyWrite opens .txt, .rtf, .rtfd, .html, .md, and .docx files. It saves to .txt (plain text), .rtf (rich text), and .md (Markdown). For more format options — ePub3, PDF, IDML, Word — use FusionMD's Import and Export features.
What is the difference between PolyWrite and FusionMD?
PolyWrite is a writing tool: it edits text, formats RTF documents, and gets out of your way. FusionMD is a document studio: Markdown editor, template engine, ePub3 publisher, IDML exporter, Writing Coach, and 40-language system. PolyWrite is $9.99 one-time. FusionMD is $49.99 one-time. They are designed to work together — write in PolyWrite, publish in FusionMD.
Does PolyWrite support right-to-left languages?
Yes. When you type in Arabic, Hebrew, Urdu, Persian, or any of the other supported RTL languages, PolyWrite detects the language from the status bar and offers to switch the editor to right-to-left writing direction. One tap — cursor position, paragraph alignment, and layout all update automatically.
