KitchenCalc — Privacy Policy
KitchenCalc is a native Mac cooking converter that converts volumes, weights, and ingredients; calculates pan substitutions; and scales recipes. This policy explains exactly what data KitchenCalc accesses, what — if anything — leaves your device, and what is stored locally.
Summary
KitchenCalc does not collect personal data and makes no network requests during normal use. All conversions, pan calculations, and recipe scaling run entirely on your Mac. The only optional network activity is the AI recipe import, which requires explicit setup. The app has no server, no account, and no analytics.
What KitchenCalc Accesses
KitchenCalc accesses only data you provide directly:
- Numbers and units you type into the converter
- Recipe text you paste into the AI import sheet
- Custom ingredient names and densities you add yourself
KitchenCalc does not access your files, photos, contacts, location, or any other system data.
What Leaves Your Device
Normal Use — Nothing
The Convert, Temperature, Pan, and Recipe tabs make no network requests. All calculations are performed locally using built-in data and the Swift standard library. No data of any kind is transmitted.
Apple Intelligence (Optional — Opt-In Only)
KitchenCalc can use Apple Intelligence to extract ingredients from pasted recipe text. Apple Intelligence runs entirely on-device. Recipe text never leaves your Mac via this path.
- Requires Apple Silicon Mac, macOS 26 or later, and Apple Intelligence enabled in System Settings
- Disabled by default — must be configured in Settings → AI
- No data is sent to DataIsland or any third party
OpenRouter (Optional — Opt-In Only)
On Macs without Apple Intelligence, KitchenCalc can optionally use the OpenRouter API for AI recipe import. This feature:
- Is disabled by default
- Requires you to supply your own OpenRouter API key
- Sends recipe text (the content you paste into the import sheet) to OpenRouter's servers
- Is governed by OpenRouter's privacy policy
DataIsland does not receive or store any content sent through OpenRouter. Your API key is stored only in your macOS Keychain.
What Is Stored Locally
- Custom ingredients — names and density values you add, stored in the app's SwiftData database in its local sandbox
- Theme preference — your selected appearance theme, stored in UserDefaults
- OpenRouter API key (if provided) — stored in macOS Keychain, never transmitted to DataIsland
None of this data is synced to iCloud or transmitted to DataIsland.
What KitchenCalc Does Not Do
- Does not transmit any data to DataIsland's servers — ever
- Does not require an account or login
- Does not collect analytics, usage statistics, or crash reports
- Does not access your files, documents, or any app outside its sandbox
- Does not share data with third parties for advertising
- Does not sync any data to the cloud
Children's Privacy
KitchenCalc is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to This Policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of KitchenCalc after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
